Creme de la Earl Grey (Townshend's)

I’ve been on an Earl Grey kick of late. Part of this is inspired by my grandfather who really likes his Earl Grey. I’ve been helping him graduate from bagged teas to loose teas and do hope he’s enjoying them. Let’s see if this Creme de la Earl Grey from Townshend’s Tea may be up his alley.

Let’s start grandpa’s journey through this tea with the loose leaves. The leaves are small and twisted. Pretty blue whisps of mallow flower petals are strewn throughout with some dusting toward the bottom of the pouch. I think grandpa would like this visually.

The dry aroma is relaxing and light. Overtones of heavy cream combine with the oil of bergamot for a light hint of citrus and spice. It’s not as strong as grandpa’s usual Earl Greys. I mark this as a tossup on whether he would prefer this aroma or that of his usual brew.

Let’s move on to the brewing phase, shall we? The leaves produce a nice copper liquor. It would be hard to tell in a dark colored glass how nice it looks, but in the Libre Tea Glass I gave my grandpa for Christmas last year it looks stellar. The aroma once brewed is svelt, with notes of cream and vanilla. It’s not as harsh as grandpa is used to. But he might like it. I’ll go out on a limb and say he will.

When drinking the tea the first thing he’ll notice is the bergamot. Yes, it’s still there. But this tea isn’t nearly as astringent or puckery as his usual brew, and as such I think he’ll either be drawn into it, or put off by it. But we won’t think about that. With less drying of the mouth and a smoother texture, I think grandpa will enjoy this tea. I know I did.

I recommend grandpa tries this smooth drinking Earl Grey tea. And if you enjoy Earl Grey teas, you are indeed likely to enjoy this one as well.
